  • HUMAN-AI CONVERGENCE - MAIN STAGE
    • 14:10 - 14:30
KEYNOTE: How AI distorts human beliefs Celeste Kidd, Assistant Professor of Psychology, University of California, Berkeley

In this talk, Celeste will discuss how psychology interacts with generative AI in problematic ways, outlining her research from baby humans, monkeys, and newer work with dolphins and dogs. Individual biological agents form their beliefs by sampling a small subset of all the available data in the world. Once those beliefs are formed with high certainty, they can become stubborn to revise. Generative AI models contain known racial, gender, and class stereotypes and biases, which downstream into model outputs that can be transmitted to users. Solutions are limited because of a key flaw in current AI system architectures: they cannot distinguish fact from fiction. Celeste will take a comparative approach in outlining the types of cognitive representations of uncertainty shared among biological intelligence, but lacking in artificial ones, to explain how current models cannot be trusted to disseminate information to people without problems.

DEEP DIVE TECH TALK: Transforming cancer registries with machine learning and neural networks Adhari Alzaabi, Assistant Professor, Sultan Qaboos University

National cancer registries rely on manual abstraction of free-text clinical records to collect vital information about cancer diagnosis, stage, progression and treatment. Many prior studies have demonstrated the ability of natural language processing (NLP) based on machine learning to extract information from free-text clinical records for a variety of purposes (diagnosis, adverse events discovery, clinical trial matching,…, etc.). We present in this study experimental results of applying NLP to extract information from the records of breast cancer patients for the cancer registry in Oman.
